What is CiTD? engine performance characteristics

CiTD engines are turbocharged diesel engines powered by a common -Rail fuel injection system and installed on Mazda cars. The engines are also known as MZR-CD, MZ-CD or CD. They first appeared in 2002. The engines were widely used until 2014, after which they were gradually replaced by Skyactiv-D engines. Most of the CiTD engines were developed by Mazda Motor Corporation itself. However, some of these are modified engines from the PSA group.

Features of CiTD engines

These engines have 4 cylinders and 8 or 16 valves. The engine blocks are made of cast iron or aluminum. The cylinder head is always made of aluminum. Depending on the version, the engines are equipped with turbos from IHI, BorgWarner or MHI and fuel injection systems from Siemens or Denso. The rotation between the components of the valve control unit is carried out with the help of a belt or chain.

Frequent defects of CiTD-models

Defects Engines
Injector washers often burn out. RF7J; R2AA; RF5C.
The vacuum line valves don't last long. RF5C.
The mass air flow sensor drops often off. RF5C; RF7J.
In some cases the high pressure fuel pump valve stops working. RF5C; R2AA; Y404; RF7J.
The intercooler flanges are prone to cracking. RF7J.
The timing chain wears out prematurely. R2AA.
Even with low mileage, the damping disc of the crankshaft can break. Y404.
Camshaft cams wear out quickly. Y406; Y642; Y646; Y601.
